I am One in Billions of People - Does it Matter What I DO?

Published: 03/17/2010 by Dawn L Billings

Hey women entrepreneurs. Have you ever had the thought, "I am ONE in billions of people - Does it really Matter what I DO?" I have. I get so frustrated when I think of voting. Do our votes really count? Or world hunger, does my small contribution make a difference? Or domestic violence, does one person volunteering really make a difference?

How many of you know 'great talkers' who are not as good at walking their talk as they are at talking it? Or how many of you know great complainers whose lips are always moving, but they are doing nothing to help alleviate the problem they are complaining about? All of know people like that. Some of us know many of those people. Some of us see them every day in the mirror.

My mother used to tell me, "It's not what you say that matters, it's what you do. So maybe one of the few things that really does make a difference in this world of billions of people is what each ONE of us does.

I hear many complain that they can't catch a break in this economy. I hear others say the world is harsh and unforgiving and needs more compassion and kindness. My question to them is "How many breaks have you made sure other people caught lately?" and "How forgiving, compassionate and kind have you been to others?"

The answer to most of the worlds problems seems obvious to me. Maybe I am a bit naive, but If the world needs a little more kindness, be the one to be kind. If you are aware of a lack of compassion, give it in abundance.

When you come across a problem, be the one to offer a solution. One of the few things that really does matter in this big world of ours, is what YOU do. It is when YOU, and YOU, and YOU and YOU, and YOU do what matters and decide to work together to DO something important that real change happens in the world. That is exactly what happened with The Heart Link Women's Network. It started with my big mouth and a dream to make the world a better place for women to dream, work, connect and succed. That is all we had when we began. Now hundreds of women have stepped up and said I will help you change the world and now we have over 140 locations in US, Canada and Australia. But every great difference starts as a dream in the heart of ONE.

The world needs leaders who do their best to turn problems into opportunities. If someone is unsure of what to do or say, be the one to offer a genuine smile and a kind word of reassurance. If you know an answer, teach it. If you have a gift, give it. If you have a message of inspiration, inspire others with it. When there is something that must be said, be the one to speak up with tenderness and respect, teaching others how to communicate in the process.

Wouldn't it be great if we all took the hands we are holding out to get something and used them to give something instead. Their is a universal law that what you give out comes back multiplied. If we understood the truth of that law, we would run over people to give them things. That is basically what the women who have chosen to stand beside me do. They make an effort to find women business owners in their community in an attempt to give them something.

Whenever you find yourself complaining, STOP. Stand still and figure out a way to fix the problem you are complaining about. If you can't fix the problem alone, find others who will work with you to fix it. Step forward. And help move others in a positive direction. Stop talking and start doing. It doesn't matter nearly as much what we say, or how unfair the world it, or that we live in crazy times. What matters is that those of us who are sane can join one another and together we can make the differences the world needs.

In a world of billions of people, does it matter what you do? Honestly, it is the only thing that matters.
